How Do Filters Work

Be an expert on how air filters work.  The Filters By-George uses four Principles of capturing particles. Inertia, interception, straining and diffusion are all God given principles that we take advantage of.  Most Air Filters use only the straining Principle.

Once a particle touches a fiber in the Air Filter it will be captured. The dipole that exists in everything (another God given principle) causes a strong magnetic attraction that holds the particle.

The Filters By-George are made of a graduated density, three-ply media. It causes the dirt to be loaded through the depth of the air filter media. By using the entire depth of the media (three quarters of an inch) the air filter will last much longer than the face loading air filter such as the pleated filter. The media in a pleated air filter is only one thirty-second of an inch thick.

The Filters By-George will in many applications double the life of a pleated air filter. Once the air filter captures the particles it must be able to hold it. Some of the depth loading filters (such as the air filters with fiber glass media that you would buy at Lowes or Home Depot) will capture some particles but after a while the fibers start to break away and the whole glob of dirt ends up on the coil.

Keep this in mind, a pleated air filter can only strain the particles out of the air. If the particle is so small you can’t see it (say 3-microns) then the hole in the filter media that captures the particle has to be smaller. Now we have a problem getting the air throughMost people can not see a particle smaller the 15 or 20 microns

The air filter must let the air through and it must capture most of the dust and dirt.  You want to catch 60% of the 3-micron particles in order to have a good air filter (check out how filters are tested).  If you're capturing 60% of the 3-micron particle then you'll be capturing a higher percentage of the larger particles.  A filter that can capture 60% of the 3-micron particles will be able to capture 80 or 90 percent of a 10-micron particle.  The Filters By-George will catch about 90% of the 3-micron particle, almost 100% of a 5-micron particle and it get better as the particle size goes up.

The reason you want to target the 3-micron particle is so the majority of the germ carrying particle that make it to the lungs will be captured in the filter.  If you study the section on How Filters are Tested you'll see that filters always get better as they load up with dirt.  The trick is to let them last as long as possible before the air is slowed down or the filter starts to unload the dirt.  The Filters By-George will not unload so all you have watch for to make sure the air is getting through is sufficient.
