What Is Air By Pass

Imagine NOT having filtered air. Yet this happens all to often because of air by-pass. Air by-pass is simply the air that gets around the air filter. In most cases air filters get better and more efficient as they loads with dust and dirt. This is because as the air filter catches and traps dust the dust particles start to collect dust (see Testing Air Filters).

The more dust the air filter collects the more resistance there is to air flow. Air will travel the line of least resistance so in most cased it will start to go around the air filter. Especially if the filter has a paper frame (such as pleated filters, fiberglass, and furnace filters). This is called air by-pass and is how a lot of the germ carrying particles such as cold germs reach our lungs.

On a pleated air filter as the filter loads the air pressure pushing against the face of the filter causes the sides to tilt in to the center leaving more room for the air go around the outside.
