Mold growing on filter

Why Treat The Filter With Antimicrobials

Why Antimicrobial? You do not want organisms such as mold or mildew growing on your home air filter. On the right is a picture of mold growing on a filter. What is the use of having an air filter treated with an antimicrobial? The term “anti” suggest that the treatment might be the opposite of a microbe. Microbes are little organisms that cause all kinds of problems if the number of colonies forming units become so great that the off-gassing starts to affect our health. The antimicrobial helps prevent these colonies from forming, therefore, contributing to a healthy home.

These organisms are most always present but usually they are such small quantities that they do not bother us. It is believed the off-gassing (the elimination process of the microbes) of these organisms will depress the immune system in our bodies when the levels get high enough. If you pick up a germ, say a cold germ or a flu bug, and the bodies immune system is in good shape it will fight off the attack by the germ. However, should you walk into a room with high levels of mold, your immune system starts to be depressed and may not be able to keep up with the rapid multiplication of the cold germs. You get sick.

Mold and Mold spores are everywhere. All mold (or mildew) needs to start growing is food (any organic material), a relative humidity above 48% and a place to grow.  The paper on the frame of a pleated  or fiber glass air filter is a good place for mold to grow. The paper frame furnishes a place and the food for the organism. If the moisture content in the air gets high enough the colony forming units will begin to grow.

Filters By-George are treated with an antimicrobial and has no paper frame for food. This helps reduce the number of colony forming units as they pass through the filter media. The Filters By-George last longer than other air filters so we feel it's important to offers some protection from the growth of these organisms. As the dust and dirt collects on the fiber or the air filter the effect is reduced but we believe the treatment is worth the cost in order to have a healthy environment.   Home    BUY NOW
